These two photographs from Paink (blog) are a superb example of how a subtle expression can add tremendous gravity to an otherwise unremarkable scene. The surprised man on the left has the look of having just heard that carefully laid plans have gone terribly awry. It’s doubtlessly something ordinary that’s vexing him…perhaps he has to delay a vacation, or the price of gasoline just increased unexpectedly. But it’s equally as easy to imagine he has just heard his elaborate scheme for a diamond heist has been uncovered by the police:
