East Berlin 1964
A splendid capture from Brian Harrington Spier. In speaking with him, Brian wondered why I “should think so highly of a snapshot snatched by a second-hand Agfa camera bought in Bury St Edmunds.” The cheap camera and abrupt nature of the shot is of course why the image is so perfectly evocative of that place and era. I believe it was the humorist PJ O’Rourke who once said that East Berlin is “always in grainy black and white.” He said that in the late 1980s too.
